When’s the Best Time to Fish for Walleye on Lake Erie?

Hey there fellow fishers! It’s Captain Kris from Sir Walleye Charters. I’m thrilled to chat with you about one of the most popular questions I hear: “When’s the best time to fish for walleye on Lake Erie?”

As someone who’s been fishing my whole life and runs charters out of Port Clinton, Ohio, I can tell you that Lake Erie is one of the top spots for walleye fishing in the U.S. With its huge waters and plenty of walleye, knowing when to go can really turn a so-so day on the lake into an awesome one.

Seasonal Patterns

Spring (March – May)
Spring is probably the best time to go after walleye on Lake Erie. As the ice melts and the water gets warmer, walleye start to get active. In March, a lot of anglers target the reefs and shallow areas where walleye spawn. This is prime time to hook some big females getting ready to lay their eggs. The bite usually picks up early in the morning and in the evening.

Summer (June – August)
Once summer hits, walleye often move into deeper waters. I like to fish in spots that are 20 to 40 feet deep, especially around underwater structures or drop-offs. The best luck during summer is usually early mornings and late afternoons when it’s cooler. Night fishing can be a blast too since walleye tend to come up into the shallows to feed after dark.

Fall (September – November)
As the water cools down in the fall, walleye start feeding more to gear up for winter. This can be a great time to fish since you can find them in both shallow and deep spots. Early fall is particularly good, with walleye hanging around their spawning areas. They bite well all day but still seem to be more active in the early mornings and late afternoons.

Winter (December – February)
Now, while lots of folks pack it in during winter, ice fishing for walleye on Lake Erie can be really rewarding. If you’re willing to brave the cold, try fishing in the same spots that worked in the fall. Setting up near structures can lead to some nice catches. Just make sure to check out the local ice conditions and safety tips before heading out.

Moon Phases and Weather

Besides the seasons, moon phases and weather also play a role. Walleye tend to be more active during full and new moons, so those are great times to hit the water. Also, cloudy days can be better for fishing since walleye are more likely to venture out of their usual spots.

Tips for Success

  1. Go with Live Bait: Walleye are big fans of live bait like minnows, leeches, or nightcrawlers.
  2. Trolling: Trolling helps you cover more ground, especially in summer.
  3. Stay on the Move: If the fish aren’t biting, don’t be shy about switching spots. Walleye can be tricky, and a change in location can do wonders.

All in all, the best time to fish for walleye on Lake Erie changes throughout the year. But with some good knowledge and techniques, you can up your chances of catching that trophy walleye.
