Former Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales has been found guilty of sexually assaulting player Jenni Hermoso by kissing her without consent during the 2023 Women’s World Cup final. Spain’s High Court imposed a fine of €10,800 and issued a restraining order preventing Rubiales from approaching or contacting Hermoso for one year. He was acquitted of coercion charges related to allegations of pressuring Hermoso to publicly support the kiss.
The incident, which occurred during the medal ceremony after Spain’s victory, sparked widespread outrage and discussions about sexism in sports. Rubiales initially described the kiss as a “friendly gesture,” but Hermoso stated it was non-consensual and felt violated. The scandal led to Rubiales’ resignation in September 2023 and a three-year ban from football-related activities by FIFA, a sanction upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in February 2025.
In addition to the fine, Rubiales is required to pay Hermoso €3,000 in compensation for moral damages. The court’s decision has been praised by government officials and women’s rights advocates as a significant step toward addressing and condemning sexual misconduct in sports. Hermoso expressed that the ruling sends a strong message and sets an important precedent for the protection of women’s rights in the athletic community.
Rubiales has announced plans to appeal the conviction, while the public prosecutor is also considering an appeal. The case has ignited national protests and global discussions about sexist violence in sports, highlighting the need for systemic change to ensure the dignity and respect of female athletes.
