You walk a lonely path back home, already dreading the sight of the porch and the dimly lit living room visible from the window. Unlocking the door, the first step feels eerie as you scan the surroundings. Where once you were greeted with a hearty “Welcome Home,” now sadness approaches to embrace you. You pour the old tea down the sink, a reminder of how much sugar they liked in it, settling down at the dining table. Grief is a feeling you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. As much as life likes to show you the light of happiness, it doesn’t take long for darkness to find its way to you.
With feelings brimming with something as strong as grief, how does one pour their heart out? How does one simply articulate the lump in their throat, the dried-up salt under their eyes? How do we begin to take the first step in navigating through grief?ย
There is one bridge as complex, powerful, and forgiving as grief that may lead you to the answerโฆย
And that goes through poetry.
There are some emotions that cannot be fathomed through mere sentences. In the wake of a shattering loss, poetry provides us with a medium through which we can truly pour our pain onto the paper. As our feelings ebb and flow, each rhyme encapsulates the perplexity of our situation. Quietly humming with every stanza, we scream out our pain until we feel light. Like clouds pouring till they dissipate, poetry helps us empty our emotions.
Anyone can be subject to grief in life through its various obstacles and challenges, whether due to the loss of a loved one or an endeavor that has failed to come to fruition. The beautiful thing about poetry is its inclusivity and abstract nature. There is no right or wrong when you are pouring out your emotions in the form of rhymes. Poetry allows versatility, and in the process of writing, you feel like you are being heard.
Using poetry to navigate through our grief, the destination lies in plain sight. You begin to heal slowly and gradually. As the wounds dry up into scars, the only difference is that you donโt look at the mark with disgust but see the story that lies in plain sight.ย
You have overcome, with your poetry, a living evidence of the struggles you have been through until you find peace and tranquility in life.
