Following the defeat, CSK batting coach Michael Hussey didn’t hold back in admitting the need for “soul-searching.” Speaking at the post-match press conference, the Australian cricket legend reflected on the side’s underwhelming performance and stressed the importance of self-assessment.
“I’m really disappointed with the result and the performance tonight,” Hussey said. “I think we need to all have a good, hard look at ourselves individually about how we’re going about it and look for ways to improve.”
The Chennai-based franchise has been facing criticism throughout the season for its lack of aggressive intent at the top. The batting unit has repeatedly failed to set a strong platform, leaving the middle order under pressure. Still, Hussey stood by the players, saying the solution isn’t in changing their natural game but in helping them regain confidence.
“There’s a lot of talk about the style of our play and things like that,” Hussey acknowledged. “But the players we’ve got, we don’t want to ask them to play in a completely different way that’s unnatural to them. I still think we’ve got the right players—we’ve just got to try and help them find some confidence and consistency.”
A big blow to CSK’s campaign has been the injury to captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been ruled out of the tournament with an elbow injury. Known for his ability to anchor innings while maintaining a healthy strike rate, Gaikwad’s absence has left a significant void.
“In my view, he’s one of India’s best players,” Hussey said. “He’s got all the skills, all the shots, but also a great cricket brain. He understands when to attack, when to maybe defend, and how to manipulate the field. It’s a massive loss for us—no question about that.”
Despite the series of defeats and the absence of their captain, CSK is not giving up on their playoff hopes. Hussey remains optimistic that the team can bounce back if they find form quickly.
“We’re certainly not putting the white flag up just yet. In a long tournament like the IPL, it is about momentum,” Hussey said. “We certainly need to change things around. But we still believe that we can do that.”
“I’ll be the first to acknowledge we haven’t played consistently good cricket so far in the tournament,” he added. “But we have the belief that we have the talent in the room and the expertise to still make it through to the playoffs.”
